Calculate Central Govt PM Surya Ghar Subsidy (Up to ₹78,000), Recommended Solar kW Size & ROI Payback Period
Kerala's high electricity slab rates make rooftop solar one of the smartest investments for homeowners. Under the Central Government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and official KSEB e-Kiran Solar Portal (ekiran.kseb.in), domestic electricity consumers in Kerala can get up to ₹78,000 direct subsidy for installing rooftop solar panels with KSEB Net Metering. Use our calculator below to find out your recommended solar system size in kW, government subsidy eligibility, net out-of-pocket setup cost, and payback period (ROI).
Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme introduced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), central financial assistance (subsidy) is directly transferred to the consumer's bank account after successful commissioning and net meter installation by KSEB:
| Solar System Capacity (kW) | Avg. Monthly Units Generated | Required Roof Area | Estimated Total Setup Cost | PM Surya Ghar Subsidy (₹) | Net Out-of-Pocket Cost | Avg. Payback Period |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ~120 kWh / month | ~100 Sq. Ft. | ₹65,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹35,000 | ~3.2 Years |
| 2 kW | ~240 kWh / month | ~200 Sq. Ft. | ₹1,25,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹65,000 | ~3.4 Years |
| 3 kW | ~360 kWh / month | ~300 Sq. Ft. | ₹1,80,000 | ₹78,000 (Max Cap) | ₹1,02,000 | ~3.8 Years |
| 4 kW | ~480 kWh / month | ~400 Sq. Ft. | ₹2,35,000 | ₹78,000 (Capped at 3kW) | ₹1,57,000 | ~4.1 Years |
| 5 kW | ~600 kWh / month | ~500 Sq. Ft. | ₹2,90,000 | ₹78,000 (Capped at 3kW) | ₹2,12,000 | ~4.5 Years |
Follow these 5 steps to register and receive your PM Surya Ghar subsidy in Kerala:
Visit official KSEB solar portal at ekiran.kseb.in or PM Surya Ghar portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Select State: Kerala, Electricity Distribution Company: KSEB Ltd, and enter your 13-digit KSEB Consumer Number and mobile number.
KSEB local section office will inspect your transformer capacity and approve feasibility online through the portal.
Choose an approved empanelled solar installer in Kerala to set up panels, inverter, and net-meter wiring according to KSERC standards.
KSEB installs a bi-directional Net Meter that records electricity exported to and imported from the grid, issuing a Commissioning Certificate.
Submit your bank account details and cancelled cheque on the portal. The Central Subsidy (up to ₹78,000) will be credited directly to your bank account within 30 days!
For domestic rooftop solar installations in Kerala: 1 kW gets ₹30,000 subsidy, 2 kW gets ₹60,000 subsidy, and 3 kW or higher gets a maximum capped subsidy of ₹78,000.
On average, a 1 kW rooftop solar system in Kerala generates about 4 units (kWh) per day, which equals roughly 120 units per month or 1,440 units per year.
Net metering allows your solar system to send excess electricity generated during sunny daytime hours back to the KSEB grid. At night, you draw power from KSEB. At the end of the billing cycle, KSEB bills you only for the net difference (Imported Units minus Exported Units).
With high KSEB slab rates and PM Surya Ghar subsidies, most residential rooftop solar installations in Kerala achieve full payback (ROI) in just 3 to 4 years. After that, your electricity is virtually free for the remaining 20+ years of panel life.
